The government of Japan is donating equipment worth about US$100,000 to Mozambique’s National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) to strengthen its weather observation and forecasting capacity.
The donation ceremony took place in Maputo on Wednesday with Japanese Agency for International Cooperation representative Kasuyoshi Sudo and Mozambican Minister for Transport and Communications Carlos Mesquita in attendance.
Sudo said that Japanese support for INAM would total US$2 million overall. The project started in February 2015 and its implementation is expected to end in July 2017.
In reply, Mesquita noted that the ceremony was taking place on World Meteorological Day – this year, aptly for Mozambique, held under the motto: “Hotter, Drier, Wetter: Face the Future.”
