‘Itinerários’, an exhibition by ceramist João Donato, opens at 6 p.m. this Wednesday at the Camões – Portuguese Cultural Centre in Maputo. The opening will be held virtually, with live transmission on social media, and the exhibition will open its doors to the public at 11 a.m. on Thursday.
In ‘Itineraries’, Donato presents about 60 recent works. The exhibition invites the visitor to take a tour through different spheres of Mozambican culture: mythology, nature and natural diversity, but also resourcefulness, temporary housing, urban routes and other dimensions.
The exhibition enjoys the participation of journalist, essayist and writer António Cabrita who, in the catalogue, offers a unique poetic reflection on each ‘itinerary’ in the exhibition.
Donato’s exhibition is a Camões – Portuguese Cultural Centre project, with the support of the Fernando Leite Couto Foundation and the Sociedade de Águas de Moçambique (Águas da Namaacha). The exhibition will run in Maputo from October 15th to November 16th, from Monday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m..
João Donato was born in 1953 in Maputo. He started work as a ceramicist in 2002 in Brasília, with the ceramist master Cecy Sato. In 2005, he went to London, where he studied under Daphne Carnegy at City and Islington College. He later worked as a ceramics technician in London until 2011, the year in which he returned to Maputo, where he currently lives and works. Donato has an established international career and his work has been exhibited individually and collectively in Mozambique, Portugal, Brazil, United Kingdom and Sweden.
