Mozambican President Daniel Chapo on Thursday received an Italian government delegation headed by Riccardo Guariglia, the General Secretary of the Italian Foreign Ministry.
Speaking after the audience, Guariglia said his visit was aimed at strengthening the historic ties between Mozambique and Italy. He stressed Italian support for economic reforms and for the sustainable development of Mozambique.
Italian ambassador Gabriele Annis told reporters that Italy is committed to “the new political cycle” in Mozambique. In addition to Guariglia, the Italian mission, which was around 50 strong, included representatives of other ministries, and government agencies, private companies and civil society organisations.
The ambassador stressed that the purpose of the mission is “to confirm and relaunch Italian support for the new Mozambican government which is carrying out a series of important reforms to stimulate the economy and is engaged in political dialogue”.
The ambassador stressed the scale of Italian cooperation. “We have a stock of 300 million euros (about 347 million US dollars) in cooperation projects that are active in Mozambique”, he said.
Annis stressed in particular Italian investment of 100 million euros to stimulate agriculture in the central province of Manica. 38 million euros are earmarked for a food production centre in the provincial capital, Chimoio, “with the aim of transforming Manica agriculture into industrial agriculture”.
The ambassador regarded Mozambique as “a strategic partner for Italy, politically and economically”, describing it as “a country full of potential”.
The ambassador was pleased at the development of Mozambique’s natural gas fields in the Rovuma Basin, off the coast of the northern province of Cabo Delgado, in which the Italian energy company, ENI, is a major player.
ENI operates the Coral Sul floating natural gas platform which has been exporting liquefied natural gas since 2022, and now has received the go-ahead for a second floating platform, Coral Norte.
