The commander of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) has decided to redefine the competencies and role of the Traffic Police on the public highways, in order to better clarify their work, Notícias reports today.
During rush hour or periods of peak flow, traffic police posted to ensure the smooth flow of traffic will no longer be handing out fines to drivers who commit offences.
According to PRM’s General Command spokesman Inacio Dina, who spoke to Notícias on the sidelines of the XXVII Coordinating Council of the Ministry of the Interior, which ended yesterday in Bilene, Gaza Province, this task would from now on the responsibility of the agents on motorcycles or others stationed near where the other traffic regulators were operating.
Dina explained the change as giving primacy to the flow of traffic and avoiding congestion caused by the police themselves on the public highway.
“It was too much of a burden to having an agent regulating traffic and at the same time issuing notices of fine when he or she detected an offence. This situation caused chaos on the roads. Today we have many agents on the road, but each one with their own role. One regulates traffic and another focuses on other issues, such as punishing infringements,” Dina said.
He denied rumours regarding the suspension of fines that had been circulating. “The notices of fines have never been suspended. All that has happened is a re-orientation regarding the role and action of each agent on the public highway.” If a traffic controller detects any infringement, he or she will immediately notify colleagues posted nearby to issue fines.
The Coordinating Council of the MINT took place under the motto “Ministry of the Interior: Guaranteeing order and public security and serving the citizen well”.
