The Organization of Mozambican Women (OMM) today solemnly proclaims Mozambique’s First Lady, Isaura Nyusi, as its new president, replacing Maria da Luz Guebuza, who resigned in July last year, reports Notícias.
The fact will occur in the course of the IV Congress of OMM, Frelimo party’s women’s league, which started Wednesday (February 10) in the city of Matola.
For three days, the delegates to the congress will, among other things, present, discuss and approve the proposal for the revision of the statutes and the five-year program of the organization as well as elect a new National Council, which will tomorrow hold its 1st Ordinary Session in order to elect a new Secretariat.
The opening session of OMM’s IV Congress was marked by several speeches on the contribution that Mozambican women have made to building the country, since the days of the national liberation struggle, a time when women took up arms and fought side by side with men.
Speaking at the opening of the congress, the president of Frelimo, Filipe Nyusi, acknowledged the work that OMM has accomplished through concrete actions that enable an active and conscious participation in development programs, thus contributing to national welfare.
“We want to leave a word of appreciation for the serenity and seriousness with which OMM has embraced the dissemination of our election manifesto and the enthusiasm, affection and contagious joy that were involved in all stages of our long march to victory in the October 2014 elections, which dictated our victory, Frelimo’s victory. Frelimo came out of that process stronger and more inspired,” said Filipe Nyusi.
Attending the event were other members of the Frelimo Party, with namely former Presidents of the Republic, Joaquim Chissano and Armando Guebuza, the veteran of the national liberation struggle Marcelino dos Santos and several others, along with domestic and foreign guests.
A New Direction Will Be Elected
“Mozambican Women for National Unity, Peace and Progress” is the motto of the Fourth Congress of the Organization of Mozambican Women (OMM).
Filipe Nyusi says the motto encourages and reaffirms the fundamental lines of the priorities of the Five-Year Government Programme 2015-2019, approved by the Parliament.
“It is certainly very big: this Frelimo mission of focusing women on the mobilization of society for the implementation of the program which takes to the bases, the message of peace and development. A difficult, noble and rewarding mission,” said Nyusi.
The Association of Combatants of the National Liberation Struggle (ACLLN) urged the delegations participating in the IV Congress of the Organization of Mozambican Women (OMM) to take all the organisations decisions in a spirit of peace, national unity and tolerance.
The number of women in organs of power and decision-making has been increasing in our country, according to Maria de Fátima Pelembe, Secretary General of OMM, a fact that OMM is happy about.
33 percent of Mozambique’s administrators are women come from OMM
“We want to reaffirm before you, Comrade President (Filipe Nyusi), our great satisfaction on the recent appointment of women district administrators who have, for the first time, reached the figure of 33 percent of the total district administrators,” stressed the official.
OMM is convinced that these newly appointed women administrators will use all their knowledge and their capacity for the continued growth and development of the districts where they are deployed, she added.
According to Fatima Pelembe, the involvement of women in the various spheres of political, economic, social and cultural life results from the commitment and the work being done by the Government and OMM.
“Today more and more women are engaged in economic and business activities through the creation and management of micro, small and medium companies, generating income and creating job posts,” she said.
Pelembe also welcomed the growing participation of women in technical and vocational training and in higher education.
