Mozambique’s First Lady, Isaura Nyusi, yesterday challenged the women of Gorongosa in the central province of Sofala to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the government and partners and learn to read and write.
The president’s wife stressed the benefits of attending school, saying that education is an important way of enabling women to participate alongside men in building a better country.
“A literate woman better understands the key messages about the importance of participating in preventing and combating malnutrition, HIV/Aids, diarrhea, cholera, cancer, malaria and other problems that we care about,” Isaura Nyusi told hundreds of women attending a rally during her working visit to Gorongosa.
Isaura Nyusi addressed the issue of preventing and combating premature marriage and early pregnancy, as well as promoting women’s rights.

Associations are a key player to achieve these goals, the First Lady said, as she stressed the importance of family planning and sexual and reproductive health, and called on the women to undergo regular screening for various types of cancer, underlining early screening’s importance in increasing the effectiveness of the treatment and the likelihood of cure.
Isaura Nyusi visited the health centre in Gorongosa, where she offered a donation of wheelchairs and crutches and interacted with staff and patients.
