With less than a year to go to the 10 October, 2018, municipal elections, citizens’ groups and independents have begun to test the waters with potential candidates for Mozambique’s main cities.
Last week, the Democratic Movement of Mozambique announced Venâncio Mondlane as its candidate, and images began to circulate on social networks this Thursday, indicating that actor and entrepreneur Gilberto Mendes may be one of the candidates for the city of Maputo.
But from intention to practice is a long way, it is not yet known if this candidature will stand or who would support him, whether civil society, citizen groups or independent, or even for Frelimo. The latter option would require Mendes winning internal elections to legitimise himself as candidate.
According to a Folha de Maputo source, Renamo is looking at Fernando Mazanga as a potential candidate, which will entail his leaving the National Elections Commission, where he currently works.
