The Republic of Ireland’s prime minister [taoiseach], Leo Varadkar, who held a meeting with President Nyusi in New York, has said his country is willing to support the peace process by sending experts to assist in its various implementation phases, including the reintegration of former military personnel.
In a brief press conference, the Irish statesman said his country’s interest went beyond support for the peace process and that the Mozambican economy was growing very fast, prompting interest in identifying areas for economic cooperation.
At present, there is some cooperation between the two countries in the mining sector, with one Irish company employing about 200 people in heavy sands exploitation in Moma, Nampula province.
“But we are looking at agriculture as another cooperation focus, along with infrastructure construction. We want Mozambique to finalise the peace process swiftly and that everything goes well, because only then will there be development,” Varadkar said.
Very busy afternoon of diplomacy here in New York at the #UNGA for the #irelandUNSC campaign: Namibian President @hagegeingob, Colombian President @IvanDuque, Foreign Minister of Malawi Emmanuel Fabiano, and Mozambique President @FilipeNyusi. Great to meet you all! pic.twitter.com/BmzA3GHwHO
