The Irish Government will channel 474,000 euros over the next 12 months into an emergency nutrition program for 14,000 children in southern and central Mozambique, according to a statement by UNICEF, who will manage the funding.
The statement says the funds will be used to improve the lives of children under five years of age affected by acute and severe malnutrition in Gaza and Inhambane provinces in southern Mozambique, and Manica in the the centre of the country.
“This support will enable early detection and treatment of acute malnutrition, as well as other interventions concerning nutritional safety and water supply, sanitation and hygiene interventions, and the coordination and monitoring of interventions,” the statement says.
Ireland’s ambassador to Mozambique, William Carlos, said that tackling malnutrition in Mozambique was a priority and that the negative impact of drought on the nutritional status of children under five as well as pregnant women should not be underestimated.
“We hope that our contribution will make a difference in the lives of those affected and that it will give them the dignity to live,” the press release quotes William Carlos as saying.
In Mozambique, more than a million people are living in food insecurity as a result of drought in the south of the country and the floods that have devastated the centre and north.
