In fulfilment of the commitment made during the launch of the Local Opportunities Seminar (SOL) in August last year, the Mozambique LNG Project, in partnership with the Institute for Promotion of Small and Medium Enterprises (IPEME), has started a certification support program in the country. Energy Works – a Mozambican company dedicated to the implementation of international management standards – has been awarded the contract to provide support training for local companies as well as development of systems and procedures required for certification.
The Director General of IPEME, Claire Mateus Zimba, stated that “with this action we are providing strategic support to strengthen the competitiveness of national SMEs and improve market access. This responds to the memorandum of understanding signed this year with Anadarko and fulfils one of the commitments of the current government agenda regarding local business inclusion. The foundations are laid for the sustainable implementation of an important qualification, providing professionalisation in management and productive modernisation, through the certification process. This will be a relevant asset for the continuous improvement of the competitiveness of Mozambican SMEs.”
Steve Wilson, Vice-President and Anadarko´s Country Manager in Mozambique, said: “This is an important milestone in our efforts aiming to empower local business in the country and obviously this was only possible due to the continuous support of the government of Mozambique in all this process. We are therefore happy to announce that, as the culmination of the public tender launched at the end of last year, we have successfully awarded the contract to a contractor which will support the training on certification of Mozambican companies to international standards, and to increase their ability and competitiveness to access the opportunities offered by the Mozambique LNG project, as well as other opportunities in Mozambique’s oil and gas industry in general.”
“For this 6-9-month pilot phase, we will work on capacity building and development of 40 Mozambican companies (20 in Maputo and 20 in Pemba) to a standard required for ISO 9001 (Quality Management). We hope that by 2020 we will be able to implement the full program, which will cover business development under the following Quality Management Systems: ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety), ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) and ISO 22000 (Food Safety Management), including other standards required for service delivery to the project,” Wilson added.
Anadarko Mocambique Area 1, Lda. and the co-venturers in Mozambique’s Offshore Area 1, announced the Final Investment Decision of the Mozambique LNG project in June of this year. In early August, the President of Mozambique, Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, launched the foundational stone for the construction of the LNG facility in the Afungi peninsula, following the inauguration of a brand new Quitunda village designed to reallocate community households impacted by the project in Palma.
The Mozambique LNG project expects to invest about $ 2.5 billion with Mozambican-owned or registered companies in Mozambique over the five-year of the period of the construction of the plant.
