Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi warned in Berlin on Tuesday that investors demand a climate of peace, since the absence of peace has a negative impact on their business,
Nyusi who began a two day official visit to Germany on Tuesday was speaking at a joint press conference with Chancellor Angela Merkel, immediately after a working lunch.
“Investors are demanding when it comes to peace”, he stressed, “because they know that peace guarantees their investments will be lasting”.
He promised that the Mozambican government will continue to work for peace. “We will do everything to ensure that investment is not held back for lack of this absolute peace”.
Nyusi said he felt that Germany greatly desires to assist and to invest in Mozambique, which was why the German authorities are advising Mozambicans to embrace dialogue. “We explained to the German government what is happening in Mozambique”, he added, “since, if there is to be aid, exact and precise information must be provided openly”.
According to the President, Germany has offered to make its contribution to guarantee restoration of an effective peace which, he said, is currently threatened by “localised disturbances in some parts of Mozambique”.
For her part, Merkel praised the efforts undertaken by Nyusi, but called for a “political solution” to the conflict between the government and the rebel movement Renamo.
“Efforts should continue and a political solution should be found to this problem”, she said. “We promise to remain in contact with the parties involved to see what are the best channels that we can prioritise to contribute best, not only as a country, but also at the level of all of Europe”.
In her meeting with Nyusi, Merkel also discussed the natural disasters that have hit Mozambique this year – a crippling drought in the southern and central provinces, and floods in parts of the north. “So we have to help”, said Merkel, without advancing any details.
On Tuesday Nyusi also met with German President Joachim Gauck, and with the Mozambican community resident in Germany.
On Wednesday, the second and final day of his visit Nyusi is scheduled to participate in the “Germany-Mozambique Business Forum, and to meet German Foreign Minister Gerd Muller.
