Mozambique: Tropical storm leaves fatalities and trail of destruction in Nampula
The police and secret services of Mozambique and South Africa are joining forces with Interpol in pursuit of fraud syndicates based in South Africa operating via new communication technologies such as the Internet.
It has come to light that these South African-based syndicates have defrauded Mozambicans who have ordered products over the Internet. One such is a group of doctors in Xai-Xai, Gaza province, who lost about US$27,000 (R400,000) set aside for the purchase of equipment, including an ambulance, for a private clinic.
The fraudsters having promised to provide the equipment in 45 days, and doctors deposited the amount in their bank account in Maputo. They never received the equipment, and the fraudsters subsequently became unreachable.
The diplomatic service police confirmed they had received complaints of fraud involving a large sum of money, but advised the victims to press charges with the police in Xai-Xai, who would then forward the case to Interpol.
Earlier this year, the Consulate of Mozambique in Cape Town, South African, issued a warning to Mozambicans to be on the lookout for Internet scams.
