Maputo, 20 May 2022- 17 May 2022 marks the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT). This is an annual event that aims to draw attention to the discrimination and violence suffered by LGBT+ people around the world. The date was chosen specifically to commemorate the World Health Organisation’s decision in 1990 to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder.
Also, on 17 May 2022, the British High Commission in Maputo organised a roundtable in partnership with LAMBDA, a Mozambican organisation advocating for the Human Rights of LGBT+ people, and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The event discussed the importance of LGBT+ rights as fundamental human rights and how the international community, government and other actors can work together to build an inclusive environment for all.
The slogan chosen for the year 2022 is “Our bodies, our lives, our rights”. British High Commission Chargé d’Affaires in Maputo, Alexandra Sheppard said:
“Mozambique has already achieved great progress, and attitudes in Mozambique make it one of the most LGBTI-friendly countries in Africa. But there is still more to do. Including implementing more inclusive policies to prevent hate crimes and violence and ensuring that everyone can freely express their rights. LGBT+ rights are fundamental human rights, and the UK is committed to promoting these rights across the world.”
The UK is ready to work with Mozambican civil society organisations, the government of Mozambique and international organisations to explore opportunities for collaboration on LGBT+ programmes. We want to bring more voices to the table, particularly LGBT+ organisations in African countries, to ensure our work is inclusive, diverse and representative of local contexts.
There is still much to be done, in all parts of the world, to help ensure that LGBT+ people feel safe and are treated equally across society. The UK is proud to stand alongside our Mozambican partners in trying to achieve this.
