Interior minister demands plans against corruption

Mozambican Interior Minister Basilio Monteiro has demanded that the provincial and district police commands draw up plans for the fight against corruption, in order to purify the ranks of the police force.
Speaking at the end of a working visit to the northern province of Nampula, Monteiro stressed that the purpose of such plans is to remove from the minds of police officers any thought of committing extortion or accepting bribes.
Cited in Wednesday’s issue of the Maputo daily “Noticias”, Monteiro said the matter had been examined at the last meeting of his Ministry’s Coordinating Council, “and we recommended that specific plans for fighting corruption should be drawn up and implemented at all levels”.
He was disappointed that in Nampula such a plan had not yet been drawn up “and the approach was timid. We want hard-hitting plans to end this phenomenon”.
The plans could not be uniform across the country, he said, “because in each part of our national territory corruption takes different forms. The plan must take into account the characteristics of corruption in each district and each command”.
The minister added that, in order to encourage the fight against corruption, the good behaviour of those officers who refused to accept bribes must be valued.
