Insurgent groups on Tuesday again attacked the village of Koko, about 17 kilometres from the capital town of Macomia district, Cabo Delgado province. In addition to Koko, there are indications that the insurgents attacked the villages of Nangololo and Roma, in Meluco district.
MediaFAX learned from a local source that the attack was promptly rebuffed by a unit of the Defence and Security Forces (FDS), thus preventing any further damage. Perhaps because of the prompt FDS response, there is no record of any deaths, despite heavy shooting.
Many villages in Macomia district have seen efforts to equip residents with firearms, turning them into militia members who, alongside the FDS, can ensure the defence of villages. This strategy is said to be paying off in some areas of the province, hence the effort to spread it to more regions of Cabo Delgado.
MediaFax also reports that terrorists attacked the village of Ntapuala, seven kilometres from the capital town of Macomia on Sunday night, learning from a local source that the attacking group was made up of at least ten armed men who entered the village at around 7:00 p.m. and started burning down houses.
One Macomia resident who received family members on Monday morning said that the attack resulted in at least two deaths and two wounded, “The dead are from Bangala 1 and Nacate, but they lived in that village for many years,” it was said.
Reports describe the insurgents leaving the vicinity of Cagembe, which was last week strongly targeted by FDS scouts, from where they passed through Nacate (also attacked), continuing towards Ntapuala.
This scenario led many Macomia residents to spend the night in the bush. Sources believe this is the same group that attacked Nacate, a village just five kilometres from Ntapuala, on Friday night.
Churumba also attacked
Despite the FDS offensives, the terrorists, subdivided into small groups, continue to harass the villages in the central and northern areas of Cabo Delgado.
Churumba, in Quissanga district, was also targeted by terrorist gangs on Saturday night last week. The incursion did not result in any deaths, as it appears that the attackers had no intention of killing what civilians they encountered.
Insurgents have recently been threatening to return to their targets at any time, particularly to islands of the Quirimbas archipelago such as Matemo, to which thousands fled after the terrorist incursion in Mucojo administrative post a week ago.
In fact, since Tuesday morning, information has been circulating about a terrorist attack on Matemo Island.
