Mozambique Elections: Fifty injured during protests in Maputo

The Council of Ministers has approved a measure cancelling fines for non-payment of social security contributions and reducing interest on arrears. The measure covers all employers and self-employed entities who are in debt to the government.
According to Ludovina Bernardo, spokesperson for the Council of Ministers’ Tuesday session, the decisions fall within the scope of mitigating the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“The forgiveness of fines and reduction of interest applies to employers, self-employed persons, with debts of contributions, fines and interest or who are interested in joining, including those who, for any reason, never enrolled in the system of Compulsory Social Security, or that have procedures pending for coercive collection of the debt of contributions,” Bernardo said.
Among other decisions taken by the Cabinet on Tuesday was the reappointment of Carlos Joaquim Zacarias as president of the Board of Directors of the National Petroleum Institute stands out.
“The cabinet analysed and approved the resolution that determines the renewal of Carlos Joaquim Zacarias to the position of president of the Board of Directors of the National Petroleum Institute,” she said.
The Council of Ministers also on Tuesday approved “the resolution ratifying the Technical Cooperation Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Mozambique and the Government of the Federative Republic of Brazil, on March 30, 2015, in Maputo”.
In addition, a resolution was approved ratifying an agreement on a US$104 million donation for improving skills development in Mozambique.
“The Government considered and approved the resolution that ratifies the Donation Agreement number D716-MZ, signed between the Government of the Republic of Mozambique and the International Development Association (IDA), on the 3rd of November 2020, in the amount of US$104 million, destined to the Skills Development Improvement Project, in Mozambique (MOZSKILLS),” Minister Bernardo said.
This Tuesday, the executive also looked at the status of company Estradas do Zambeze’s concession contract.
