Over 300,000 people in Inhambane, corresponding to 24,000 families, are at risk from normal and above abnormal rainfall, strong winds, floods and other weather events in the current rainy season.
The National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) predicts that many districts will be affected by floods, droughts, cyclones, earthquakes and – in the case of Govuro, Vilankulo and Maxixe – spring tides
The figures were shared by INGD information officer Zacarias Mauae during a meeting of the Emergency Operating Committee (COE) when presenting the proposal for the contingency plan for the 2021/2022 rainy season and cyclones.
Mauae said that the INGD estimates that more than 445 classrooms, used by 35,579 students and 9,000 hectares of diverse crops could be destroyed by such events this rainy season, affecting a total of 4,817 producers.
The INGD is working on the basis of three hypothetical scenarios.
Scenario One is composed of more frequent threats or those of small magnitude (strong winds, lightning, localized floods in towns and cities and drought), but with destructive effects on the most vulnerable communities, affecting about 44,897 families, equivalent to 224,493 people.
Scenario Two – in combination with Scenario One – involves the risk of flooding in the river basins, and cyclones, affecting around 298,279 people, 7,070 from floods and 58,371 from cyclones.
Scenario Three is the result of the combination of Scenario Two and possible earthquakes, affecting a total of 300,953 people, corresponding to 60,191 families, of which at least 2,674 are at risk of earthquakes.
Scenarios Two and Three are seen as the most likely in the current rainy season. Scenario Three foresees around 300,953 people at risk.
Calculation of food assistance needs in the face of the drought took into account the forecast number of families (24,000), with emphasis on the districts of Govuro, Funhalouro, Mabote and Panda.
To assist people at risk, INGD needs just over 73 million meticais, against 64 million in the previous season. The amount will be applied to the acquisition of 204 tents, 97,369 kits for students, 691 kits for teachers, food and other necessities.
According to Mauae, the increase results not only from the greater probability of
