Ten inmates escaped from the Homoine district jail, in Inhambane province in the early hours of Sunday (15 January), and are still on the run.
The Hominoie district jail houses a total of 80 inmates.
Prison director Benedito de Castro admitted that the escape may have been orchestrated by one or more of the prison guards and was therefore establishing a commission of inquiry to look into the matter.
De Castro told Radio Mozambique that community leaders in the areas where the prisoners came from had already been informed about the escape in order to assist with the prisoners’ re-arrest and return to prison.
