The bodies of two passengers missing after the sinking on Wednesday of a boat linking Maputo and Inhaca Island were found today in Maputo Bay yesterday, an official source told Lusa.
“The lifeless bodies were found near the shore of the island,” Maputo Maritime Administrator Maulide Nuro Ussi said.
The boat capsized on Wednesday morning after leaving Maputo for Inhaca without authorisation, according to Ussi.
“We have no idea what actually happened, but the boat left at a time when navigation was prohibited,” Ussi said. The boat was carrying passengers despite not having “a structure suitable for transporting people”.
According to the Maritime Administration, the boat was carrying a total of 10 people – four crew members and six passengers, including a four-year-old child who was still missing yesterday.
By the end of Wednesday, three people had been rescued alive. Search operations are continuing during daylight hours.
Located at the entrance of Maputo Bay in southern Mozambique, Inhaca is one of the province’s main tourist attractions, but connections between the island and the city are still poor, with few boats making the crossing.
