The National Institute for Disaster Management (INGD) on Wednesday (21-06) announced it would soon start implementing a €3.5 million (241 million meticais) project to manage displaced people which already has the support of several strategic partners, both domestic and foreign.
Speaking at a meeting on “Challenges and Opportunities in the Context of Displacement Due to Terrorism and Natural Disasters”, the vice-president of the INGD, Belém Monteiro, said that measures were being designed with a view to providing resources for the internally displaced over a period of four years.
“What can be guaranteed is that the institutions involved are making efforts to disburse the funds for the project, so that they meet the essential needs of the displaced people,” he said.
In turn, the country director of the Norwegian Council for Refugees, Ulrika Blom, said that Mozambique was advanced in terms of laws but needed to improve articulation between the various actors that deal with the matter of internal displacement.
“Support strategies must be defined for the displaced, who almost always have the same problems, such as housing,” Blom explained.
According to the INGD, the country has more than two million internally displaced people, mostly as a result of the armed conflict in Cabo Delgado.
