Mozambique: Rita Freitas ceases duties as Inspector General of INAE
The monthly inflation rate in Mozambique rose 0.9 per cent in July according to the data from the consumer price indices for the three largest cities (Maputo, Nampula, and Beira), gathered by the National Statistics Institute (INE). This compares with a rate of 0.76 per cent in June.
As usual, inflation was due overwhelmingly to rises in food prices. In particular, the price of cooking oil rose by 7 per cent, rice by 2.2 per cent, onions by 5.5 per cent, maize by 11.8 per cent, maize flour by 1.3 per cent, and dried fish by 4.8 per cent.
In total, inflation between January and July stood at 10.27 per cent.
The annual rate of inflation continues to rise. Over the last 12 months, prices have increased by 20.68 per cent, with the cost of food and non-alcoholic beverages going up by 35.84 per cent.
Of the three cities covered by the survey, inflation was highest in the capital Maputo (1.26 per cent in July). Prices went up by 0.7 per cent in Nampula and 0.22 per cent in Beira.
Year on year, Beira has seen prices rise by 24.73 per cent, whilst the annual inflation for Nampula is 21.1 per cent, and Maputo 19.07 per cent.
