Expenditure on salaries of Mozambican civil servants rises 40% to over €3,000 million

Mozambique recorded inflation of 6.34 percent in the first quarter of the year, above the government’s 2016 average inflation target of 5.6 percent, according to National Statistics Institute figures released on Wednesday.
“The country recorded price increases in the order of 6.3 percent in the first quarter of the year.
Power and non-alcoholic beverages dictated the trend, contributing about 5.29 positive percentage points to the total,” the consumer price index report reads.
In the same period last year, inflation was 2.96 percentage points lower at 3.4 percent, representing a 13.61 percent increase. On a monthly basis, March 2016 registered 1.3 percent inflation, 0.91 percentage points lower than February.
According to the statistics institute, two of Mozambique’s three major cities saw above-average price rises this quarter.
“Beira is leading the way with an increase in the order of 9.20 percent, followed by Nampula city with 8.25 percent and finally Maputo, with price increases of around 4.16 percent.”
