The sixth criminal section of the Sofala Judicial Court will today see the start of the trial of the three men charged with the murder of Portuguese citizen Inês Bota in Beira, Sofala province, at the end of 2017.
The three men were known to the victim. One of them was her personal trainer.
According to SERNIC, the alleged perpetrators, after kidnapping Bota, took her bank cards, forced her to hand over the codes, and withdrew money from her account.
They subsequently took the young woman and threw her, still alive, in the Pungwe River, about 70 kilometres from Beira. Her body was found two days later. The suspects were arrested and confessed to the crime.
One of the suspects managed to flee prison while awaiting trial months after his arrest, during the mass escape of 18 prisoners from Beira Central Prison. He is still at large and will be tried in absentia.
