The National Institute of Statistics (INE) will form a partnership with Maputo Municipal Public Transport Company (EMTPM) and the Agency for the Promotion of Imports and Exports (APIEX) to accelerate the processing of data on the IV General Census of Population and Housing, which took place in the first half of last August across Mozambique.
A memorandum of understanding was signed on Friday in Maputo to help streamline the processing of the data collected in the census.
INE spokesman Cirilo Tembe explained that data processing was a complex exercise, hence the need to involve other players.
“We have been making efforts to combine synergies with different institutions with a view to cost containment and guaranteeing the quality of work. As you know the country is not very healthy in economic terms. We want to use the potential of these companies to guarantee the accomplishment of some phases of the processing,” he said.
He said the INE would temporarily hire about 600 people to assist in processing census data.
Under the agreement, the EMTPM undertakes to transported staff to the data processing centre.
The INE hopes to release definitive results by the deadline set.
“The release of the definitive results is scheduled for June next year and this will not change, at least for now,” Tembe said, to which he added: “Let’s do everything we can so that this date is not changed.”
The population census is budgeted at US$75 million, of which US$40 million was spent on the data collection phase, the remaining amount to be invested in the compilation and processing of the data collected.
On the penultimate day of the process, the INE had registered a total of 26,822,464 inhabitants, 98.9 percent of its goal.
