The Ministry of Industry and Commerce (MIC) will soon launch a national ‘Industrialize Mozambique’ programme, (PRONAIMO) with the aims of streamlining the industrialisation process nationally, building and mobilising investments, and professionalising and modernising productive capacity.
So said Minister of Industry and Commerce Carlos Mesquita on Thursday during the opening of the 5th edition of the Economic Briefing, promoted by the Confederation of Economic Associations of Mozambique (CTA) and held in hybrid format under the motto “Business Performance and Economic Prospects for 2021”.
Minister Mesquita explained that the implementation of PRONAIMO would boost industrialisation in Mozambique through a process based on local value chains in industrial niches, the replacement of imports by competitive exports, the building and mobilisation of investments for infrastructure to support rapid growth, and the integrated professionalisation and modernisation of productive capacity.
“We encourage and hope that the 5th edition of the Economic Briefing will achieve, in an objective manner, the proposed indicators, and that it will act as a contributory basis for a repository which the government can reach out to in the adoption and adjustment of policy measures,” the minister commented.
In turn, the president of the Confederation of Economic Associations of Mozambique (CTA), Agostinho Vuma, said that, in terms of the business environment, he expects from the government the introduction of normative instruments relevant to the business sector such as the electronic visa, access to energy outside the network, and increases in sector competitiveness.
“As is our vocation, and in the context of the public-private dialogue, we will continue to work to make these perspectives effective. We welcome the implementation of the Bank of Mozambique’s measures, but we are concerned that they will not result in such structural changes in the economy as would make the results sustainable,” Vuma said.
The 5th edition of the Economic Briefing was attended by the representative of the African Development Bank (AfDB) in Mozambique, Pietro Toigo, among other guests.
