The Indonesian government has shown interest in collaborating with its Mozambican counterpart in the development of the energy sector, especially in the areas of renewable energy and the production of batteries for electric vehicles (EV).
The intention aligns with the vision of the Mozambican executive regarding the energy transition, local transformation of the raw material (graphite) and the generation of more jobs.
The interest was expressed by Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan at a bilateral meeting between Indonesia and the Mozambican delegation led by Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Carlos Zacarias.
“We want to collaborate with Mozambique in the transition to renewable energy, focusing on technological innovation and the development of human resources,” the Indonesian minister said.
To this end, he noted, it was crucial to encourage the private sector and state-owned companies to invest in technology transfer, particularly in the electric vehicle battery industry.
In this context, he highlighted that a joint group had been created to draw up a memorandum of understanding for the mining and energy sectors.
The intention was also confirmed by Carlos Zacarias. “Indonesia is very interested in working with Mozambican companies in the production of various minerals and batteries,” Minister Zacarias said.

This year, Indonesia opened its first EV battery factory. It also has one of the largest reserves of nickel in the world, a material used to produce batteries. In 2020, the Indonesian government banned the export of nickel ore, to boost the development of the local industry.
The Asian country also produces anode materials for lithium-ion batteries used in the manufacture of electric vehicle batteries.
Mozambique is one of the world’s largest sources of graphite, another raw material for the electric car battery industry in China and the United States.
