Diário de Moçambique ( crop) / The main suspect was arrested, his presumed accomplices still at large
A 27-year-old Indian national, Shael Saleembhai, was murdered in his apartment in the building next to the Motichande supermarket on Artur Canto de Resende street in Beira’s Maquinino neighbourhood on Wednesday night.
The attackers also assaulted his wife, inflicting serious injuries.
Police have detained a 23-year-old employee, Kishan Bhola Bhaú Ramani, and indicted him on homicide charges along with four alleged accomplices still at large.
The police and other sources contacted by the “Diário de Moçambique” said they were unable to confirm or deny whether the apartment was robbed. The recovery of Meghanee’s hospitalised wife may help answer the question.
The suspect lived in the apartment where the murder occurred. He said that, on Monday, when he returned from work at around 7:00 p.m., he knocked on the door but no one answered. Noticing the silence within, he called the guard, who at the time was not there.
“I had to call the mother of the landlord of the house that the deceased rented, who also knocked on the door for a long time without anyone answering. She had to use a spare key to open the door. Then we saw two bodies on the ground. We immediately alerted the police to what had happened,” Ramani said.
Ramani said he had worked for Saleembhai for four months in a warehouse in Passagem de Nível he owned. He had met him in Angola, where he owned a grocery store, he said.
Assailants deceive security guard
Sofala police spokesman Daniel Macuácua said that Saleembhai’s death was voluntary homicide. The main suspect of the crime, Kishan Bhola Bhau Ramani, who lived in the victim’s house, and a group of four other men turned up at the building at around 19:00 p.m.. The guard allowed Ramani to enter but not his companions.
According to Macuácua, faced with this unexpected hurdle, Ramani gave the guard 200 meticals to go buy some drinks nearby.
“When the guard returned with the drink, Ramani descended the stairs alone and his friends had disappeared. They are presumed to have used the service stairs.
“When the police were informed, they went to the scene and discovered a lifeless body inside the apartment and a pregnant woman with serious injuries in the bathroom,” Macuácua.
As to means, the police presume the individuals used knives and other sharp objects.
Macuácua said that the police were conducting an investigation aimed at capturing and holding to account the individuals involved, and repeated calls for the public to report any suspicious activity to the police.
