India is to provide 34 scholarships for Mozambicans to attend undergraduate and graduate courses in the Indian state of Gujarat, as a way of strengthening cooperation in the higher education sector.
The information was recently shared in Maputo by the High Commissioner of the Republic of India, Rajeev Kumar, during a meeting with Mozambique’s Minister of Science and Technology, Higher Education and Technical-Professional Training, Gabriel Salimo.
Kumar revealed that the Minister of Higher Education of the Indian State of Gujarat would pay a working visit to Mozambique from the 23rd to the 26th of February, accompanied by a delegation composed of representatives from 14 universities from his state.
The mission would look to assessing opportunities for cooperation in the field of higher education between the universities of Gujarat and national higher education institutions in Mozambique.
In reply, Minister Salimo expressed the Mozambican government’s satisfaction at receiving this ministerial mission, and said it was looking forward to participating in all the visit activities.
Regarding challenges to cooperation between the two countries, Salimo highlighted the need to adjust the joint work programme and the elaboration of the respective action plan, as well as implementing the Memorandum of Understanding on Tele-Medicine and Tele-Education signed in October 2019 in New Delhi, the Indian capital.
Minister Salimo said that Mozambique would be pleased to count on the support of the Indian Government in boosting initiatives and programmes in the area of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) legislation, strengthening support for technical and professional education, and boosting and leveraging the Malauana Science and Technology Park and revitalizing scholarship programmes at postgraduate level in Natural Sciences.
Responding to the wishes of the Mozambican government, Rajeev Kumar said that one of the immediate foci in the scope of bilateral cooperation was the establishment of a pilot project in Tele-Education and Tele-Medicine, and, to this end, a higher education institution and a Mozambican health unit would be identified to sign agreements with Indian counterparts and host the project.
