The Government of India has offered Sernic, the Mozambican National Criminal Investigation Service, a donation of 44 vehicles valued at US$$638,000 (EUR 572,300), with the aim of strengthening its operational capacity.
India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, quoted today by Mozambican daily newspaper Notícias, says the gift is part of a US$ 4.5 million (EUR 4.03 million) aid package to the Ministry of Interior of Mozambique covering the 2010-2020 period.
Mozambique’s Interior Minister, Basilio Monteiro, said the vehicles would strengthen Sernic’s operational capacity and enable it to better respond to the challenges it faces.
“We will do everything to ensure the correct use of these assets, in recognition of the value and symbolism of the goodwill and willingness of the Indian government and people to help our country,” Monteiro said.
On Tuesday, the Indian executive offered the Mozambican navy two speedboats.
India was one of the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with Mozambique after independence in 1975, but bilateral ties have been strengthened in recent years with Indian interest in Mozambique’s energy resources growing.
