The increasing traffic of large vessels in the Mozambique Channel, many of which carry substantial quantities of hydrocarbons, has heightened the risk of spills and subsequent pollution in Mozambican waters.
To address this risk and enhance their response capabilities to potential incidents along Mozambique’s coast, the National Maritime Institute (INAMAR) organized a simulation event on the beaches of Beira city. This exercise aimed at preparing and refining responses to hydrocarbon spill pollution.
The drill, which involved testing various scenarios, included participation from firefighters, coastal, lake, and river police, the navy, the Maritime Administration, and the Beira Municipal Council. The exercise was supported by the Norwegian Coastal Administration.
It’s worth noting that a significant portion of the hydrocarbon spill response equipment was destroyed during Cyclone Idai in March 2019.
