The provinces of Sofala and Zambezia are likely to experience heavy rainfall on Saturday, according to the National Institute of Meteorology, which is recommending people living near rivers take precautions.
The National Institute of Meteorology says low pressure will bring heavy to moderate rainfall to central and northern regions of the country over the next 48 hours, with Sofala and Zambezia provinces particularly severely hit.
In the face of these warnings, National Institute for Disaster Management personnel are on the ground evacuating families from risk zones to safe places and allocating emergency resources.
A National Directorate of Water Resources Management warning suggests that, over the next 48 hours, floods may occur in the Licungo watershed in the Maganja da Costa and Namacurra districts, affecting communications between the coast and the Lugela-Milange and Namacurra-Maganja districts.
The cities of Beira and Quelimane and Dondo municipality are also expected to be on high alert. Although with less impact, rains accompanied by thunderstorms and high winds are also forecast for Maputo and Gaza provinces from Saturday on.
