The National Inspectorate of Economic Activities (INAE) a few days ago suspended operations at a company selling purified water which was found to be unfit for human consumption given the high levels of faecal coliforms it contained.
INAE spokesman Tomás Timba reports that the firm, headquartered in the city of Maputo and the seller of ‘Glacial’ brand water, has no permit for the given activity and lacks suitable quality control mechanisms.
Timba announced that two vinegar production factories were also suspended, one a ‘Ruby’ brand concern in the city of Maputo and the other of the Avena brand, in Maputo province.
“Analysis shewed that these two brands of vinegar had excessive levels of acidity, which makes these products unfit for human consumption. The factories do not have quality control mechanisms and use rudimentary methods, and are therefore unable to measure citric acid levels correctly. The factories are now triggering mechanisms to reach the parameters imposed by the law,” Timba said.
Also according to Timba, INAE has also recently seized approximately 400 kg of “tseke tseke” brand sugar because it was not fortified, contrary to legal requirements imposed in Mozambique. The sugar is produced in Malawi and imported illegally.
Meanwhile, eight university social centres were told to immediately stop selling alcoholic beverages, as were 149 outlets selling alcohol near schools.
All told, 384 economic units were detected across the country operating without permits required for their activity.
