The National Inspectorate of Economic Activities (INAE) has closed a variety of establishments in Maputo for poor sanitation, a kindergarten among them for the first time.
The INAE closed the Bela Criança kindrgarten in Maputo in July for poor hygiene.
“This is the first time we have had to shut down a kindergarten, but we gave it priority because of the children. The conditions were very bad,” INAE spokeswoman Virginia Muianga said.
INAE also warned that it might withdraw the licenses of two Maputo bakeries which had been inspected three times but had not so far complied with recommendations.
“We are seeing reluctance at two establishments, one of them the Zurifo bakery, where a critical hygiene situation cannot be allowed to persist,” Muianga revealed at the institution’s monthly briefing.
Muianga explained that INAE would refer the case to the licensing authorities to secure the withdrawal of the two establishments’ licenses.
It was annoying, Muianga said, that the INAE inspection team had visited these establishments three times but nothing has changed.
“On our first visit, we found poor hygiene conditions and left recommendations, but when we returned, we noticed that the situation had in fact worsened,” Muianga complained.
“We will take the necessary measures,” Muianga promised. “We will decree the closing and withdrawal of the licenses.” If the establishments wished to reopen, she explained, they must undergo fresh inspections.
Muianga reported that the INAE had fined a total of 22 commercial establishments out of the 1,376 it had inspected country-wide during July.
“When the conditions are glaringly bad, we are forced to close the institution. We have had to close the Pensão Central and Bela Criança kindergarten here in Maputo because of the hygiene situation,” she said.
