The Inspectorate of Economic Activities (INAE) closed two factories producing food oil and liqueurs and an equal number of shops in the southern Mozambican province of Gaza on Monday for various irregularities.
The oil producer, Indústria de Gaza, and Gaza Licores are both located in the provincial capital Xai-Xai, and the two food shops are located in the Chibuto district.
At Indústria de Gaza, the INAE found unhygienic conditions, an accumulation of garbage, broken bottles at the packaging facility and oil tanks exposed to the open air. In addition, there were no locker rooms for the workers, 10 of whom were found working without uniforms.
The INAE immediately closed the establishment, which will only reopen when it improves hygiene and processing conditions. They also seized more than 1,300 boxes of Santa Clara and Chap-Chap oil, as well as five full 4,500, 3,300, 500 and 600 litres containers.
At the Gaza Licores factory, the inspection also identified poor hygiene conditions at the production site and the presence of obsolete material, in addition to 11 workers with incomplete uniforms and three without uniforms.
In parallel to these activities, the inspection closed two establishments in Chibuto district last week. In the first INAE found several products out ofdate and a lack of basic rules of hygiene, since the place was infested with cockroaches, rats and pets.
In the second commercial unit 30 bags of deteriorated corn were found.
In the aftermath of these activities, the INAE Gaza delegate, Gabriel Chongo, warned the province’s economic operators to comply scrupulously with the rules governing the activity.
“These irregularities do not please us and so we appeal to economic agents in Gaza province to provide a quiet festive season for the population. We, as INAE, will be ruthless in any action that results from trade that harms the consumer and public health in general, “he was quoted as saying.
