The National Inspectorate of Economic Activities (INAE) has ordered the closure of two bakeries in the Mozambican capital, Maputo, due to poor sanitary conditions. They are the Moapao bakery in the Malhangalene neighbourhood, and the O Forno bakery in Alto-Maé.
Speaking at a press conference yesterday, INAE Inspector General Acacio Foia said that he had witnessed unpleasant situations in both bakeries.
At the Moapao bakery, loaves were racked near the workers toilets, which cockroaches in every corner of the establishment.
“The objects used to knead the bread were all grimy, leaving the impression that they have not been washed for a long time. The toilets were beyond words, dark in colour (and it was not their original colour); a situation which left the inspection team outraged,” he said.
Meanwhile, in the O Forno bakery, workers “were not using any kind of protector to prevent their hair from falling into the dough”.
A bread warehouse on Avenida Eduardo Mondlane, was also closed by INAE.
“Two weeks ago we visited about ten establishments, and had to close three because the situation there was very critical. We left several recommendations, among which was to maintain workers’ hygiene along with that of the locale,” he said.
“Today we visited these places and we said that Grelhados Tropicais could reopen its doors, while the C’afé Estoril was not yet ready to reopen. Regarding the Café Continental, we were unable to enter because those responsible were not in, but we believe that efforts are being made to improve the situation,” he added.
The INAE is currently forming an intervention plan to cover the informal sector, which contributes most in terms of the economy and also presents the most irregularities. The institution will work in collaboration with the Mozambican police, the municipality, the Ministry of Health and society in general.
