The European Union has committed to investing a total of EUR 697 million in Mozambique by the year 2020.
The investment, which falls under the National Indicative Programme for Mozambique in the period 2014-2020, covers poverty reduction and improving food security and civil society capacity.
The figure was announced yesterday in Maputo by EU cooperation chief Isabel Faria de Almeida during a press conference jointly organised by Radio Mozambique and the European Union.
Almeida also examined at the lessons learned from the past, explaining that the national priorities were good governance and development, rural development and support for civil society.
In the areas of good governance and development, the European Union pledged to disburse EUR 330 million over the period under review, which it hoped would support inclusive growth and the consolidation of democracy as well as reducing poverty.
She added that, in rural development, the European Union was investing EUR 325 million with the aim of improving the food security situation and increasing rural competitiveness.
“The remaining EUR 42 million is being used to support the improvement of civil society capacity and the implementation of the same projects,” she said.
The aim of the conference was to provide media professionals in state-owned media with information on the European Union. Programmatic themes addressed were history of the European Union, its members and areas of action; the Schengen area and the Euro; policies, activities and financing for Mozambique, and how to access information from the EU.
Speaking about the single European currency, the Euro, de Almeida pointed out that it is currently the official currency of 19 of the 28 member states of the EU, and considered one of the symbols of European identity.
