The water supply to the cities of Maputo and Matola should return to normal from tomorrow, with the completion of the replacement of the water mains ruptured just over a week ago.
Work has now entered the final phase, and will be completed within the schedule set by the Water Supply Investment and Heritage Fund (FIPAG).
By the end of Sunday morning, the contractor had completed the laying of the concrete bases and metal frames that will support the mains pipes. Efforts will now focus on the assembly of the mains and respective support structures.
A communique from Águas da Maputo Region [ADeM] claims that work is proceeding at a satisfactory pace and within the established schedule.
On Friday, AdeM initiated a new water distribution plan for Maputo and Matola aimed at satisfying demand and reducing the waiting time for connection.
The improvement consisted of the introduction of a valve and a bypass aimed at isolating the work area and increasing flow from 2,000 to 5,000 cubic metres of water per hour.
In effect, the new distribution regime will make water available every other day, against the previous two-day regime. The neighbourhoods served by the Maxaquene and Intaka distribution centres are being supplied daily for periods ranging from six to 13 hours a day.
The scheme is being reinforced with water tankers in critical areas of the two cities, with 25 distribution points already installed.
