A mission from the International Monetary Fund is in the Mozambican capital to assess the extent of the nation’s debt, Felix Simione, a Maputo-based economist with lender, said by phone.
State-owned Mozambique Asset Management missed a May 23 deadline to make a $178 million interest repayment, raising fears that other government-owned entities would default on their debt. The nation owes foreign creditors $9.84 billion.
