LISTEN: “I’m in a panic…” – Francisco Sithoi Jr., Mozambican student in China
Mozambicans living in China are concerned about the risk of the spread of the coronavirus which has already killed more than 100 people there.
“I’m in a panic,” says Francisco Sithoi Jr, a civil engineering student in Beijing.
Some students who can afford to do so would prefer to return to Mozambique until the situation is under control.
“Today we had two students who travelled, and by the end of the week, at least eight will be able to travel,” Sithoi, who coordinates Mozambican student representation in China, reports.
His group consists of more than 330 students living in different parts of China, including Wuhan, the epicentre of the coronavirus.
“I’m afraid” – Diaz Santana
Popular Mozambican actor Diaz Santana, who works on dubbing Chinese films and soap operas in Beijing, is also concerned.
“Yes, I am afraid. We’re all scared – which is why a busy city like Beijing is completely empty,” she says.
In an interview on VOA Washington’s ‘Fora d´Horas’ programme, Santana said that, in addition to the preventive information they had received from Chinese authorities, Mozambicans were getting good follow-up from their embassy in Beijing.
