Wood logs, 15 large trucks, six tractors and other equipment belonging to illegal logging operators has been seized by inspectors in the Gilé National Reserve in Zambezia, central Mozambique.
The seizure was announced by the administrator of the Gilé conservation area, José Dias, who also declares that the proliferation of illegal loggers is corruption-related. According to Dias, corruption is hindering the fight against illegal logging, which is reaching epidemic proportions across the country.
“The situation is worrying, as it involves local authorities, community leaders and corrupt individuals from both the Reserve and the Protection of Natural Resources force,” Dias says.
Illegal logging in the Gile National Reserve is contributing to the disappearance of protected species such as ironwood.
The Director of Natural Resource Conservation Areas in the provincial department of Land, Environment and Rural Development in Zambezia, Domingos Valia, acknowledged Dias’ assertions and said that the government is working to address the problem.
