Mozambique loses about US$67 million a year to illegal fishing, and the Ministry of the Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries is conducting a meeting in Beira, Sofala, to find solutions to the problem.
Speaking on the sidelines of the four-day meeting, Leonildo Chimarizane, National Director of Operations at the Ministry of Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries, said that government action to combat illegal fishing had resulted only last month in the seizure of two Comoros vessels. The vessels’ owners were fined and their catches confiscated.
