Speaking to Portuguese companies on Tuesday about investing in Mozambique, former deputy prime minister of Portugal Paulo Portas said that “when one is criticised, [the right thing to do] is to persist, and not, when one fails, to give up. This is perhaps the difference between the first [Ronaldo] and the second [Messi]”.
“We must take the Ronaldo and not the Messi attittude to Mozambique,” Portas told the Portugal-Mozambique Bridges for Economic Development Conference in Cascais, Portugal, making an analogy with Lionel Messi, who has announced his intention not to play for the Argentine national team any more after losing to Chile on penalties in the final of the America’s Cup.
Speaking on the Economic Diplomacy and Influence Zones panel alongside former Mozambican prime minister Luisa Diogo, the EU ambassador to Mozambique, Sven Kuhn von Burgsdorff, and the vice chairman of the executive committee of the Millennium BCP, Miguel Maia, Portas used sports to stress the importance persevering in the face of criticism and adverse conditions.
“For me, the national team is over. I did everything I could. It hurts not to be champion,” 29-year-old Messi said.
Former Mozambican Prime Minister Luisa Diogo had previously stated that the relationship between Portugal and Mozambique “should serve as an example for other countries”, and stressed Mozambique’s huge potential.
