Mozambique: At least seven suspected insurgents killed in Macomia
On Thursday, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) is launching a formal request to the international community to assist Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe, member states of the organisation affected by Cyclone Idai.
According to a SADC statement, the ” formal regional request” will be made in Windhoek, Namibia, by SADC’s acting president and President of Namibia, Hage Geingob, and will seek new support for the more than three million people affected by the cyclone and the floods that followed it.
The Regional Appeal “fully builds on the requests for assistance made by the three affected countries,” which “require immediate humanitarian assistance, including food, shelter, clothing, potable water, sanitation and medical support, considering the occurrence for cholera and other diarrhoea infections, malaria and water-borne and water-related diseases”.
“The support will also aid in early recovery actions in the affected districts, thereby helping to them to rebuild their lives, livelihoods and economies,” the statement adds.
Cyclone Idai hit Malawi, Zimbabwe and the central region of Mozambique on March 14, claiming 602 lives and injuring 1,641 in Mozambique, where the cyclone is estimated to have affected more than 1.5 million people.
The Mozambican Ministry of Health on Sunday announced a sixth death in the post-cyclone cholera outbreak, this one in Beira, the area worst affected by the outbreak, where three-quarters of the 3,161 cases reported by the authorities have occured.
The SADC also includes Angola, Botswana, Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eswatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Mauritius, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Tanzania and Zambia.
SADC to launch a Regional Appeal for Humanitarian Assistance for millions affected by the devastating impacts of Tropical Cyclone Idai
A devastating Tropical Cyclone Idai has affected an estimated 3 million people in three of the Member States of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region; Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. The three SADC Member States have declared national disasters and requested immediate international support.
In light of this situation, the SADC Chairperson, H.E Dr Hage G. Geingob, President of the Republic of Namibia will on Thursday, 11th April 2019, launch a Regional Appeal for Humanitarian Assistance in response to Tropical Cyclone IDAI in Windhoek, Namibia.
The Regional Appeal, which fully builds on the requests for assistance made by the three affected countries, will be a formal regional request to the international community to provide assistance to affected Member States who require immediate humanitarian assistance, including food, shelter, clothing, potable water, sanitation and medical support, considering the occurrence for cholera and other diarrhoea infections, malaria and water borne and water related diseases. The support will also aid in early recovery actions in the affected districts, thereby helping to them to rebuild their lives, livelihoods and economies.
