Mozambique’s Ministry of Education needs two billion meticais (27.5 million Euros) for the rehabilitation of sector infrastructure destroyed by Cyclone Idai in the centre of the country, provincial Education Minister Conceição Sortane says.
Quoted by Notícias on Wednesday, Sortane said that the money would be used to rebuild or rehabilitate more than 6,000 classrooms in the provinces of Sofala, Manica, Tete and Zambézia, all affected by the landfall of Cyclone Idai on March 14 and the floods that followed it.
“The amount will be adjusted based on the survey which is underway to determine the needs for rehabilitation and the acquisition of teaching material for students and teachers,” Sortane said.
The post-Idai reconstruction plan in the education sector was handed over to the Reconstruction Office created by the Mozambican government on Tuesday of this week.
From here on, Sortane added, construction of infrastructure would meet the guidelines of UN-Habitat, the United Nations agency specialised in housing issues, regarding resilience in the face of natural disasters.
According to Mozambican authorities, Cyclone Idai, which also affected Malawi and Zimbabwe, caused 603 deaths in Mozambique and affected more than 1.5 million people, destroying or damaging many public buildings.
