Algeria is to support communities in central Mozambique affected by Cyclone Idai with aid worth US$200,000 dollars, it was announced yesterday in Maputo.
The support comes “in the light of the historical relations between Algeria and Mozambique”, a statement distributed to the press by the National Institute of Disaster Management (INGC) on Tuesday read.
The official delivery ceremony, at the INGC’s premises in Maputo, is scheduled for today (Wednesday).
Tropical Cyclone Idai hit Malawi, Zimbabwe and the central region of Mozambique on March 14. According to the latest assessment by the Mozambican authorities, the cyclone affected more than 1.5 million people in central Mozambique, causing 602 deaths and 1,641 injuries.
