On Thursday 24th June, Ibo Island celebrated the 260th anniversary of its elevation to village status.
Ibo was the first capital of Cabo Delgado province, and hosted the first customs post established on the island.
Acting on behalf of head of state Filipe Nyusi, the Minister of Culture and Tourism, Eldevina Materula, conducted the official Vila do Ibo Day ceremony under the motto “Ibo Island: 260 years making history”.
The ceremony was marked by the laying of a wreath in the Praça dos Heróis, an act witnessed by several leading figures.
In her speech, Materula said that “celebrating the 260 years of Vila do Ibo unequivocally symbolises the continuity of the stone by stone building of our history. It is a way of renewing the commitment to tread this path of strengthening our young nation and to continue to work towards achieving sustainable development”.
The celebration of Vila do Ibo’s 260-year history also manifests one of the goals of the Government of Mozambique’s 2020-2024 five-year programme, focussing on research into and preservation and dissemination of Mozambique’s cultural heritage, both material and not.
Minister Eldevina Materula said that “the 260 years since the elevation of Ibo Island to the category of village is testament to the persistence and resilience that characterise Mozambicans”.
“In fact, despite the extensive damage caused by Cyclone Kenneth in 2019, and the instability resulting from the inhumane actions of the armed conflict,” Minister Materula explained, “the islanders did not give in. This is the resilience that must lead us as Mozambicans and join efforts to restore tranquillity and peace, essential elements for undertaking our task of rebuilding our history and bicentennial village.”
Also present at the ceremony were Secretary of State for Cabo Delgado, António Supeia; the Governor of Cabo Delgado, Valige Tauabo; Ibo District Administrator, Issa Tarmamade; and the Minister of Transport and Communications, Janfar Abdulai.
Among anniversary activities are a gastronomic fair, crafts, cultural performances and various thematic activities alluding to the 24th of July-Ibo Day, which took place the day before, as is traditional.
