The chairman of the Board of Directors (PCA) of the Civil Aviation Institute of Mozambique (IACM), João De Abreu, told ‘Carta de Moçambique’ on Wednesday (08), that “by Friday, the list of countries with whom Mozambique will have international flights on a reciprocal basis, will be concluded”.
The measure aims to allow the entry of specialists, managers and investors to boost tourism and business, as announced by the President of the Republic a few days ago.
“Right now, we are finishing the selection of countries, because not all will be[included]. I am convinced that in two days’ time [tomorrow] the list will be completed,” De Abreu said.
After the selection, the IACM chairman, said that it would be up to the government to authorise the reciprocal flights with the countries identified.
In a telephone interview, our interlocutor explained that the selection of countries aims to avoid the importation of cases of the new coronavirus, which could lead to the collapse of the national health system and the rapid spread of the disease.
Prior to these flights being authorised, humanitarian, repatriation and cargo flights would continue to happen in accordance with the state of emergency rules. “For example, tomorrow [today], a TAP Portugal flight arrives from Lisbon,” the IACM PCA said.
Covid-19 has forced eight foreign companies to cancel flights to Mozambique: the Angolan Air Carrier (TAAG); Portuguese Air Transport Company (TAP), although it carries, on occasion, return flights; Kenya Airlines; South African Airlink; South African Airways; Ethiopian Airlines; Turkish Airlines; and Qatar Airways.
The pandemic crisis also led to the rescheduling of the original June start of Emirates Airlines flights to Mozambique to August.
