The bodies of a young couple missing since last Monday have been found in an abandoned building in the area designated for the Matlemele landfill dump in Matola municipality.
They are newlyweds Lídia Mulungo, 27, and Zacarias Marrengula, 28, married in October last year at the Center for Mission Evangelization.
There is little information on possible motivations of crime, but the couple were found blindfolded and bearing signs of aggression suggestive of having been tortured to death.
According to Folha de Maputo, the couple lived in Maputo’s Coop neighbourhood and were taken to the place where the bodies were found post mortem.
Matlemele continues to live with the horrors of crime – this is not the first time bodies have been found at the landfill site. In fact, it is the fourth case in less than a year. Residents describe the victims as showing signs of violence to the head and the rest of the body, with the eyes, nose and mouth covered with adhesive tape.
Suspicions of death by asphyxiation and strangulation were confirmed by the experts at the scene who said, however, that only the legal post mortem report would provide precise details as to cause of death.
According to locals, the bodies were discovered by herdsmen’s dogs. The police were called to the scene and took the bodies to Maputo Central Hospital morgue.
“I’ve never seen anything like it. We are scared,” said Matlemele resident Feliciano Rodrigues, 32.
The couple were not Matlemele residents, and are thought to have been murdered elsewhere and taken to the location later, since there were signs of dragging on the ground.
Maputo Province police spokesman Emídio Mabunda said the crime was already under investigation.
“Information still to be confirmed indicates that the couple left their home the day before (Monday) to go to Marracuene (Maputo province). We learned of the existence of two bodies in Matlemele around 9:00 AM yesterday (Tuesday),” he said.
The families of the victims said it was too early to comment on the issue, given that the case is still under investigation. The date of the funeral has not yet been determined.
Church Center of Missionary Evangelization representative José Nhaca described the couple as servants of God who had abdicated the pleasures of the world and served as workers for four years.
The couple will be buried this Friday in the Michafutene Cemetery in Maputo.
