Houses in the Chuiba neighbourhood on the outskirts of the city of Pemba, the capital of Cabo Delgado, may be demolished in the next few days, since they are allegedly built on land belonging to the Water Supply Heritage Company (FIPAG), which forbids construction in order to avoid the contamination of the water supply.
Some of the people who have received letters warning them to leave the site voluntarily are demanding compensation.
Residents were given two months’ warning in March of this year, but nobody has left so far, while others have proceeded to build regardless.
Chuiba’s water supply system was built before independence, and initially occupied an area of 50 hectares, but today, after the alleged land invasion, FIPAG is left with less than two hectares of land.
