The number of homes flooded in Xai-Xai city, Gaza province, has risen to 226 following intermittent rains over last ten days.
Xai-Xai city councillor Almeida Guilume told Noticias that the situation mainly affected low-lying land prone to flooding when it rains. At present, at least 1,400 people are affected and 140 kilometers of urban roads have been damaged, with some sections impassable. About 600 hectares of crops have also been flooded.
If the situation prevails, Guilume says, temporary accommodation may be needed, but so far solidarity among neighbours and family members has successfully addressed the situation of those affected.
According to the National Meteorological Institute, INAM, Xai-Xai City registered 93.7 mm of rain on February 24 and 68 mm on Saturday. The forecast for the area is for winds with strong gusts and moderate to strong rains.
INAM foresees moderate to strong rains (30 to 50 mm of precipitation in 24 hours) possibly rising to strong (more than 50 mm in 24 hours), accompanied by severe thunderstorms and winds with gusts of up to 60 kph. The weather system will also affect the districts of Massangena, Chicualacuala, Chigubo, Mabalane, Mandlakazi, Chibuto, Guijá and districts of Xai-Xai.
